Review

Praise for Myth & Magic: Have you ever dreamed of collaborating with Kinuko Y. Craft on one of her beautiful paintings? Your chance has arrived: in her new coloring book Myth & Magic, Kinuko provides beautiful line drawings of some of her favorite fantasy themes – including Beauty and the Beast – that could tempt children of any age to indulge in exploring color guided by her compositions. In her introduction, she addresses the viewer directly: "After creating the first few sketches, I delighted in the idea that you and I will craft a masterpiece together. My line compositions are an invitation for you to fall in love with color." Note: each sketch provides a credit space for the colorer on the same line as Kinuko s copyright credit. Myth & Magic offers more than 39 full-page sketches, not to mention details and designs on the inner covers, all available for personal coloring. This is simply one of the most enticing and well-produced coloring books on the market. --Locus Magazine, March 2017 edition

This book is stunning! All the pictures are beautiful, they are however a bit complicated. I love complicated pictures, so I am in love with this book!

I have long been a fan of Kinuko Y. Craft's artwork, especially in puzzles and calendars over the years. I was very happy to see that she had translated her artwork into line drawings for a coloring book. The designs are all very detailed and intricate with many small spots to color. I am using a combination of ultra-fine point alcohol-based markers and sharp pointed colored pencils to be able to color the details in this book. The designs are elegant and richly detailed. I find them to be an excellent translation of her work into a coloring book. I would be hesitant to recommend this book to anyone who has fine motor control or vision issues but otherwise, I think it is a fantastic coloring book and one that can provide many hours of fun and challenging coloring. This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.40 Hand-drawn intricate Fantasy Designs by Kinuko Y. CraftPrinted on one side of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly rough, and perforatedGlue BindingDesigns do not merge past the perforations and most have a frame of sorts around the outer edge of the design.Alcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers and India ink pens bleed through the page in spots.I use a blotter page below my working page when using these wet mediums. It keeps the ink from seeping through. You can also remove pages before coloring to keep the rest of the book from being damaged.Gel pens leave a slight shadow on the back of the page but do not bleed through. Some pens require additional drying time.Colored pencils work well with this slightly rough paper. I was able to layer and blend easily with both oil and wax based pencils. In addition to the copy of this coloring book that I purchased on Amazon, the publisher sent me a sample advanced reader copy of this book

I love to color fairies and assorted mythical creatures, so I thought I'd love this coloring book, but I don't. Diabolical designs doesn't really describe how EXTREMELY difficult to color many of the pages are. The lines in the long, flowing hair are so close together even an ultra fine point pen is useless. After awhile coloring at this level of intricate detail page after page, becomes tedious and something to dread rather than relaxing or stress-relieving. I love a challenge, but it should have an element of fun as well and this book really doesn't. The cover looked so intriguing and the subject matter is one I enjoy, but as they say: Never judge a book by its cover. This is for advanced colorists who enjoy diabolical detail and spending long hours with each picture. The paper is only average, so will require a blotter for pens & markers although markers are pretty much ruled out here due to the extreme tiny detail. Ultra fine point pens & very sharp pencils are all I have been able to use so far.

This is one of the most beautiful coloring books that I've come across. To call it a coloring book really does not do it justice. It really is a gorgeous book of illustrations. The pages are one-sided, the paper is cardstock-like, and the printing is excellent. The drawings are very detailed and I just cannot say enough how extraordinary they are.

I've been familiar with Craft's work for many years, having seen it on book-covers. This book is gorgeous but the pictures, as I expected from having seen her paintings, are nearly all very, very intricate. This is basically a book for experienced colorists with steady hands and extremely sharp pencils (or needle-point pens) although--as with any coloring book--a less experienced colorist can always "cheat" a little by coloring a detailed area all one color, or shaded, rather than filling in each tiny space. No matter how you color them, the pictures are beautiful, with a cross-section of myths, fairy-tales, and just plain fantasy. I colored the cover picture (which is inside the book) and it took awhile but the end result was worth it! I left the unicorn white, of course, but colored all of the "illuminated manuscript" border, all the other details, and nervously did shaded purples for the butterfly wings on the fairy-queen. The high-quality paper made the colors luminous--one reason I prefer colored pencils--andthe unicorn and the wings dominated the composition as I had hoped they would. The pages are printed on one side only, although there's a little single creature or design on the blank side just to dress it up. The pages are perforated for easy removal--and you'll probably want to frame some of them. The paper should take gel pens and markers but, as always, be sure to put something underneath to protect the page that follows.

This coloring book has got to be one of the most beautiful books on the market. There's nothing that compares to it in any way at all.First: the line art is the most incredible and beautiful that I have ever seen. It's definitely a book for the advanced colorist, but once you start coloring, you will wish that it was every book.Second: the art be is printed on a relatively heavy, creamy colored paper. Each page is printed single sided, AND the pages are perforated.Third:. I would strongly suggest use of pencils just because it is such intricate, delicate line art. I'm not saying that you couldn't use gel pens, you very well may be able to, but I would guess that markers are out of the question (I may be wrong, because I primarily use pencils, myself).Four:. I paid full price for this book. No one has had any influence on my review
