This is simply amazing. This was my 6th marathon, and I had bought this book about 10 days before the race. I followed 5+1 carbo loading cycle, and it helped. For a first time, running a marathon I was feeling great all the way through. I ran almost even splits of 1:49:XX and 1:51:XX, posting a new personal best of 3:41:09. In fact, I even managed to increase my speed in the last 5k after a reasonably conservative mid-section.Of course, sports nutrition and especially race nutrition is something you'd want to experiment with to see what is right for you - things differ for different athletes. This books describes various alternatives and suggests some reasonable choices.I'd highly recommend to read this to everyone.There is no wall!
Fitzgerald has lot of information to back up some simple rules of what to eat and how to manage your nutritional intake in the days and hours lead up to a Marathon or Half Marathon.I applied what I learned from this book and within a month I lost 10 lbs and I ran my best Half Marathon ever with energy to spare!I really enjoy the scientific facts, experiments and outcomes he shares. It makes what he has to say extremely credible. It was an exciting read for the genre of book. And the fact that it worked for me made it worth it!
The book is amazing and everyone running any race should read it. My book was purchased as "new" but arrived with substantial water damage on the back cover and some of the last pages. It's as if it was dropped in a puddle, but my packaging was completely watertight, so... not sure what happened.
There is quite a bit of science behind the science of carbo loading and fat loading. Fitzgerald knows what he is talking about. I tried the fat/carbo loading before my most recent marathon and felt great even at that dreaded 'wall' at 20 miles.
Loved the calorie load outs and the ratios of things to eat. Training plans aren't the greatest you can find much better online, however the diet / recovery food to accomplish the training will become an excellent resource.
I was purchasing another book and Amazon suggested this one, among others. I notices Matt was a co-author, read the description, found a used copy for a good deal, and went for it. This was an awesome buy. I'm actually still waiting for my original book purchase to arrive but I'm not disappointed with this one at all. This is very well written an full of so much good information. It's primarily aimed at distance runners, but runners of sorter distances that are interested in getting leaner will find very good information in here as well. A leaner runner is a faster runner. The dietary guidelines are backed up by actual science, include multiple views and discussions about WHY you should follow a particular path, and do not exclude ANY dietary groups. It's awesome. I'm vegetarian and can use this. I can also hand this to my meal eating husband to use and then share it with my celiac step mom. There are only a few recipes shared for a reference. The guidelines are easy to follow and non-excluding of dietary restrictions. So nice to see for once.But it's not just a diet book for distance running. It's also a training book. The idea is to avoid hitting 'the wall'. If you've ever hit it, you know what I'm talking about, and it stinks. The book also goes into training methods, tapering, carb usage during training, racing, and recovery, and so much more. I read the irritated reviews about the sentence referring to peanuts growing on trees and it's in there. He's a smart guy so I'm going to go with editing error on that one. It's a really good book and if you're serious about training and improving your distance running, this is a good book for you. I can't speak much for shorter distance runners, but this may be able to offer some excellent advice for you as well.
So I had picked up one of Matt's books years ago. I found it interesting but I really didn't want to "hear" what it had to say. This time I was ready. I have always known in my heart that I run better when leaner and I am less injured. Seems to me that many runners that are looking for info and support about how to best lose weight while fueling their running do not find it through traditional weight loss books, groups, diets. Many of us aren't particularly welcome at these venues either, as often we are still in a normal weight range. I feel like Matt is talking to me, personally and finally I am listening. Hooray and thanks!
wasn't an easy read for me, I liked much better "the non marathoners guide" for first time runners
