This is an outstanding book, but it's a re-issue of a book that came out a couple of decades ago. Check to see if you already have the original before ordering. I only realized my own redundancy when I excitedly opened mine.If you don't have the original and want a copy, I recommend this version, as it is much thinner, lighter, and less expensive than the original, but still has the same content. Finally, you REALLY have to be a Beatles geek to get into it, because you can't easily just find out, say, how many takes did it require to complete Eleanor Rigby. It goes in date chronology, not by song.
The book lived up to it's reputation as the go to resource.Excellent as a stand-alone piece, it's also a superb companion work to Lewisohn's "Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years: Vol 1" and served as the basis for "All The Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release by Philippe Margotin, Jean-Michel Guesdon and Patti Smith.I feel adding "Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles by Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey" and most importantly "Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties by Ian MacDonald" provide perspective to understanding the Beatles' extraordinary talent and drive.John, Paul, George and Ringo were also quite fortunate to have George Martin as well as Norman Smith and Geoff Emerick contributing their creativity to the process. The synergy within the band and with the producer and engineers are all an integral part of phenomenon.
Details of the book are covered well by other reviewers. I'd like to say that using this book as a companion to the Anthology CD's is g8! Many times the author mentions a certain take of a song that shows the song very differently (like Strawberry Fields Forever Take 1). You can then just play the song off Anthology and see what the author means. Alot of fun!
I've been a Musician since 1962 & a fan of The Beatles since 1963. Will be especially interesting to musicians & recording engineer's.This book is also a must have for Beatles fans interested in behind the scenes technical details/ notes regarding their recording style(s), techniques, inventions, musical & recording experimentation's... & much more. You will learn much about how they made their recordings sound as they do, including many groundbreaking ideas that have since become the industry standard, to this very day.
...this is the one. Rather than deal in myth, hyperbole, and deification, this book tells the detailed story of how and when every moment of music was made, and who made it. Seriously, I am very familiar with the Beatles literary catalog, and this is literally THE ONLY Beatles book I would call "essential," not just for lovers of the Beatles but for anyone even remotely interested in the process of creating and recording music.
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas. It's a nice quality hard cover book..heavy too. Has some good info in it. My husband is obsessed with the Beattles and has just about every book ever published about them and he knows so much about the Beattles already. But this book actually had info. in it he didn't know so he has enjoyed reading it.A nice idea for that Beattle obsessed fan of yours too!
Lovely book. I am learning things I didn't know about the Beatles previously, which is starting to become a task. There's plenty of stuff to learn about here, and hearing the takes that coincide really complete the experience if you have access to them.
Can someone tell me, please: In regards to the playing of their instruments, does this book explain "who played the piano solo", "who played the guitar solo", "who played the catchy guitar riff" on each song? For example, who did the main guitar work on 'And Your Bird Can Sing'? Was it George or was it John? That's the type of information I am hoping to get in regards to this book. I realize that this site it for rating the book, not for asking questions. But I'd like to know, please. Thank you.Update: July 2013.Recently I was able to buy a brand new, soft cover copy of this book at a surprisingly low price. After reading about 1/2 of the book, I can now answer my own questions (from above). This book gives a day-by-day description of each of the Beatles recording sessions, whether they were attended by all 4 of the members, or just some. It describes the number of takes, which take was the best, which one was overdubbed, how many hours it took, etc. etc. For many of the songs, the author mentions who sang lead, who sang backup, who added overdub vocals, etc. These are things that many of us knew already. As far as the playing of their instruments is concerned, we are seldom told "who played what". Yes, it's very easy to assume that Paul played bass, John played rhythm guitar, Ringo played drums, and George played lead guitar. But I know that this wasn't always the case. I was hoping that this book would say a little more in that regard. It would have been nice if the author had included a list such as this for each song:Piano: PaulDrums: RingoRhythm guitar: JohnGuitar solo: GeorgePiano solo: George MartinAnd, is it true that Paul would sometimes "re-do" something that George had done...because George hadn't done it quite right? There are occasions where we are told that "George Martin added a piano solo", or that "Paul added overdub vocals". But, I was hoping for more details regarding the playing of the instruments...on every song. For someone who was familiar with the sessions, this type of information would have been very easy to have added to the book. The book did not include the information I was hoping to get. But, it's still a very interesting read and well organized. For this reason, I reluctantly give it 5 stars.
