I know that the shipping and delivery of the book are not part of the book, but the fact that every book I buy from Amazon arrives damaged is something to note. In this case, since the packaging was poor, the book arrived with dented corners and a scratched cover.That being written, I was surprised to find that the book is smaller than the companion book, Artists (that book is about two inches bigger in width and height), and did not come with a dust cover.Knowing full well a comphrensive overview of all writers is utterly impossible unless captured on the internet, and lacking even then, I was also surprised to find such luminaries as P.G. Wodehouse and Dorothy L. Sayers missing from its pages...I wish there was a continuation of the book online at the DK website and hope they implement something like that in the future.Being a raging bibliophile and aspiring author, I highly recommend this book to others of like minds.

Without a doubt DK produces some great looking books with superb content. If you love reading great literature then this book is a must have to give you that much need background, perspective and insight into an authors' works .

It's outrageous Julio Cortázar is not even mentioned in the directory. Other than that it's a pretty good book. So -4 stars for not having the greatest. I really don't get it, Alice Munro gets a page (lets be honest, her stories are terrible), and Rilke, Pessoa, or Lorca only make it to the directory. Did I mention Cortázar is not there?! Also, on the section Writing Today, they start with Saramago, who died a couple years ago, so kind of tasteless. You can see the editorial line of the book, as they try to be inclusive, balancing men and women writers, and people from all over the place. It's very sad this book is so PC (except for the subconscious anglo exceptionalism, as Shakespeare is the only writer to get six pages, while Cervantes next to him only got four) , because if we are honest, most great writers have been Western men. I absolutely love Virginia Woolf is the portrait, as she is terrific and absolutely deserves a spot here unlike Alice Munro haha. Moreover, with such terrible writers "Writing Today", I would have gotten creative and bold by including Woody Allen. Only Saramago deserves to be on the "Writin Today" section more than Woody!

I saw this in a bookstore but at full price, I always hesitate and then check Amazon. Lo and behold, it was less than half the price here. It's a lovely book about writers and is filled with photographs on nice paper. It's an art book you can put out and show off on your coffee table, but it is also inspirational and interesting, so you won't just set it down and ignore it like other coffee table books. Buy it!

I have mixed feelings about this book. I had read about it in O Magazine and immediately ordered it. As a writer, myself, I was interested in knowing more about the writer's writing structure and how they set up their lives in order to be the writers they were/are. This book wasn't that. It is a short blurb on cool writers (many I don't know and will read). It is more of a coffee table book than it is the strong reference I thought it would be.

Really good value for a 'coffee table book' which always captures my interest more than expected. Nice history lesson for younger generation -- can be opened to any page or person -- sent as gift already and purchased a couple more for friends. Give it a try. It's also at the library.

A lot of writers left outVery disappointing

Purchased as a gift and the recipient was awed by it. Richly detailed beautiful photos and well organized. Several other attendees at the event asked to look at it and said that they intended to purchase one for themselves.
