Before bedtime, I read every night, one prayer. And most of the times I have tears in my eyes. Peter Marshall knew how to draw near to God. And he knew how to word that which is equally burdening to us all, believers and unbelievers. I feel like Peter is close to us as a brother in Christ. That, no matter what day and age he would have lived, he'd always be contemporary, never too old nor outdated. And that is because his prayers are all our prayers: deep, honest and moving!
I bought this book as soon s it was published the first time and absolutely love the poetic nature in which he wrote his sermons and said his prayers. I wish we had someone like him now in our Senate. I still order his books because every time I loan one out, it is never returned to me. So, I say that it must have blessed the soul who borrowed if from me!This is a book for a fledgling Christian or a mature one. Don't miss a chance to read these sermons and prayers and experience poetry made fine with words of the Bible.
His prayers are as applicable today as when Peter Marshall prayed them many years at the church he served as well as the US Senate. Excellent reading for all who care about what is happening in our country today and would certainly reading and meditating upon by all our Senators. When these prayers were delivered, trust me, they were never sugar coated.
This collection of Peter Marshall's sermons by his wife Catherine Marshall is a great work. It has been out for many years - yet never loses it value. These are some of his sermons and prayers he presented each Sunday in the Presbyterian congregation in Washington - great points and illustrations - One which has been used many times - Peter & John go to the empty tomb of Jesus on Sunday - they see the burial clothing in order but no body...Marshall describes it as a glove in which the hand has been removed - yet the glove retains its full position - but no hand inside. A great book.
I keep coming back to this book each evening. Oh, that we had a Peter Marshall in the Senate today. What a Man of God and he was taken from us too soon at age 46. His prayers are words of wisdom, honor to God and phrases you cannot forget..
I love the format of this book. It was as if I could actually hear Dr. Marshall speaking. What is so striking is that these sermons are 66+ years old and are still relevant in our present day. The book is a great value and would be of good assistance to those seeking to grow closer to God.
I enjoyed reading all of the reviews for this book because it gave me confidence to want to buy (and read) it for myself ... and as my heading states "it did not disappoint."Reading Peter Marshall's sermons allowed me to get to know him in a very surreal way because although I had never heard him speak - so, I was constantly picturing (and imagining) him handwriting each of these sermons.Preparing a sermon is very personal and it comes with an insight and feelings that the writer, himself, had to have experienced and felt throughout his personal journey with God. So, this book allowed me to actually get a glimpse of Peter's relationship with the Father (his personal Father). At that point, I began to feel like I wasn't reading a sermon, but rather, I felt as though I was reading his personal journal (and that made it even more of a special treat)!And of course, as I read "his journal" ... I also got a different perspective and appreciation for "the Master" or "Chief" (as Peter affectionately referred to Jesus as).You simply KNOW truth when you read it because one of its characteristics is that the words and ideas that are read and conveyed seem TIMELESS - and that is exactly what this book is. As I said ... I enjoyed getting to see a glimpse inside of Peter's heart ... but, I appreciated seeing (and feeling) the Master's heart - even more! Absolutely timeless.
Even though this book was published some years ago, Christ's stories are timeless. I found the 'no frills' approach that Peter Marshall uses to retell the Gospel stories very refreshing and gained new insight for my own Bible Study and telling of the stories.
