Okay, I wasn't expecting the depth of expansion of the future humanity becomes in this first novel in this series . Being a cynic of governments in general - if we ever develop into a space faring race, I can certainly visualize a seemingly dysfunctional outcome as portrayed. This in no way is a statement on the excellent quality of this book or the author. Very few typos but not enough to impact my rating, but they are there. I really enjoyed this book and am looking s forward to the rest of the ongoing series. I care for the characters and they are well developed. War is hell, regardless of what point in our history; but future tech and factional human enemies seems all too real. Military science fiction is one of my favorite genre's I read for fun and entertainment. This book could stand alone but a preview of the next in series leaves me with my mouth watering for more. Am super-glad I have discovered Jay Allan's books and that there is plenty more to read going forward. I usually read several books at a time depending on my mood but I honestly had to drop the other two (and they're good too) until I finished this one. Kudos to Jay Allan on a fine read. And thank God there is much more to for me to read going forward.
As a former Military Man (and Disabled Veteran as a result) I noted a very few errors in equipment described on the book, all of them of current vintage as I haven't any experience with the future weapons, Natch.Regardless, this book is a good read and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in potential future conflicts and how the Military Mind goes about prosecuting wars while the politicians care not one iota about the troops in the field.If past experience with politicians is any indication, then the author is spot on in portraying them in the future.Now go. Git! Read this book!
We've all read this story before. A young nobody from a nowhere life joins the military, has a talent for it, and shoots up the ranks. But what makes the story a bit different is that the author has given us a lot of background. He's giving us information about the world and how it came to be. With this backstory, the plight of our hero is a little more believable. Minor spoiler alert: the fact that he comes to realize the truth of the world he fights for and then realizes why he truly fights, makes for quite the interesting situation.With that all said, I did enjoy the story. And I'm ready to continue on with the entire series. I found the writing to be easy which is saying a lot for somebody like me who is dyslexic. Not once did I find myself having to reread sections to make sure I understood what was happening. Everything was clear and concise. I've collected several of Jay Allan's books, and am happy now that I've finally gotten the chance to read his work. If you enjoyed military sci-fi as I do, stories that do have an intelligent plot, I recommend that you get your own copy of this story, read it, and then continue on as I will.
A true picture of military life regardless of the century or the enemy. The character is enjoyable and well developed. The other significant characters are also fairly well developed and contribute directly to the story without clogging the pace. The pace is generally good and the interest level is maintained. The "Staff" and "Political" segments are very accurate to any veteran or historian of any military action in the 20th century and accelerating in the 21st. Given the setting it's almost possible to regard that situation as "same old, same old - new place" and other pithy military sayings that you all know but I can't repeat here.Mr. Allan creates a very believable universe which he populates with interesting characters so I would recommend it. Although, many veterans will find it too true to reality and a bit unsettling in the memories it invokes. A truism might be: "the soldier wins wars and the politician's lose the victory". In that respect this is almost a satire of the Viet Nam War or the current situation in the Mid-East. So read it and learn from the veteran's point which this presents very well.
I'd give this 5 stars if it wasn't for Jeff Bower's horrible narration of the Audible recording. This is an old recording...probably early in Audible's existence. It shows. The narrator can't pronounce many English words. He massacres the English language all throughout the book. It seems that words I consider to be fairly common...he may have never heard before, or at least he doesn't pronounce them correctly. It's super annoying to listen to him narrate. He does not know how to pronounce the words "tithe", "habitable", "Cassiopeia", "annex", etc. There are dozens more common English words in this book that Mr. Bower mispronounced...as if he skipped elementary school English class and didn't learn his vocabulary words. Also, the special effects used on computer voices is distracting and annoying. I guess it was cool in 2000. HA! I don't mind the overused reverb/delay/flange effects as much as the poor use of English. Surprised that got by the editors. They must have been asleep.With that aside...the writing of Jay Allan is solid...the story is entertaining. I really like this author a lot.
I bought this based on the first dozen or so 4 and 5 star reviews, and the fact that it was on sale at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, I don't get the 4 to 5 star ratings. I'm a quarter of the way through, and I've just given up. Here's why:The writing is proficient and technically believable: the post-apocalyptic backstory, the descriptions of combat, training, space travel, weaponry, tactics - all thoroughly believable.Problem for me is the narrative. I'm twenty-five percent into the book and, other than a speech delivered by a general to a room full of conscripts at basic training, there has been almost no dialogue. The first 25% of the book is virtually all expository, with little to no character building or plotting. At this point in a novel, I need more than action scenes and faith to get me to keep reading.
