I have read this book up to Chapter four so far, and have already found two serious errors in definitions. One example is on page 5, Phonemes are defined as the smallest parts of language with meaning. This is the definition for Morphemes, not Phonemes. To make matters worse, when the author goes on to give an example for phonemes, it seems like he is trying to match it to his incorrect definition. Many places like this exist in the book; if they are confusing to a student who is very familiar with this content, I can only imagine how someone learning the content for the first time would feel. A second example is a whole chapter where the author writes a very culturally biased process of child's language development. He writes about processes that commonly happen in English speaking American households, and that are fascinating to look at, but he then goes on to assert that these are necessary to proper language development in children. This claim has been refuted by linguists who have studied children and adults in other cultures where children are not regarded as speaking partners at all, yet they still acquire language just as well as American children.In addition to the outright errors, the author does not seem to have put a lot of thought into the flow and organization of the book. At times he goes on tangents, and other times he glosses over important information.

Going through my masters program in Special Education, I have been required to purchase a lot of books. Some are worth it. This book has been the most beneficial to me (mainly because I know so little on the topic) and my instruction.I found countless pages and resources for teaching reading/language. Great tables and charts.

I needed the book for class and everywhere else was selling it for wayyy more.Book is in very good condition.
